Abstract

A new sustained-release formulation of Oxybutynin (Ditropan SR) is currently undergoing clinical evaluation in patients with a demonstrated central nervous system lesion during a four week double blind study. The dosage is titrated for each patient from 2.5-10 mgs Ditropan SR given twice daily. The patients keep voiding diaries prior to and during the study. Clinical evaluation of the symptoms and a general quality of life assessment are performed. Cystometrograms were performed pre and post study. Ditropan SR has been shown to be safe and effective for the treatment of detrusor hyperreflexia in neuropathic patients. Drug treatment resulted in a significant decrease in urinary frequency and marked reduction of urge incontinent episodes and voided volume increased with treatment. All of this was objectively confirmed by cystometrics. The incidence of anticholinergic side effects was noticeably lower with the sustained-release formulation.
