Abstract

Clinical management (or practice) guidelines are management protocols encompassing a defined or suggested course of action systematically developed to assist practitioners in decision making for specific clinical conditions. Guidelines are developed by experts in the field and are based on the most pertinent and strongest clinical evidence available. These protocols offer some assurance to the practitioner that they are following the best practices when treating a patient. In this chapter, we will characterize clinical management guidelines, discuss their significance in the current practice, and explore how they are created. Then, we will examine the possible benefits and limitations of their healthcare application, and present a body of literature on their medicolegal implications.
