ECHOvirus Encephalitis/Myositis in X-Linked Agammaglobulinemia

To the Editor: In 1981 we reported¹ successful treatment of echovirus 11 meningoencephalitis and myositis—fasciitis in a patient with X-linked agammaglobulinemia, using a modified intravenous immunoglobulin preparation. After seven months of therapy with large doses the patient apparently recovered; electromyographic and histologic abnormalities improved, and echovirus could no longer be cultured from cerebrospinal fluid or muscle. The follow-up has been informative. After his initial response, he was treated with 150 mg of modified intravenous immunoglobulin per kilogram of body weight every three weeks, maintaining his serum IgG level between 600 and 800 mg per deciliter.
