Abstract

Lateral approaches to the spine present distinct anatomical challenges and considerations for the spine surgeon. Perhaps most challenging, the thoracolumbar junction represents an especially complex region with its convergence of the retroperitoneal space, the thoracic cavity, the diaphragm, and the thoracolumbar spine. This chapter reviews the retropleural and transpleural approaches to the thoracic vertebrae using the lateral approach.
