Dr. Greg Carter is chief medical officer and director of the physical medicine and rehabilitation residency program at Providence St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Medical Center in Spokane, WA. He also oversees the research programs there. He is a professor and fellow of the Gleason Institute for Neuroscience in the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine at Washington State University (WSU). His clinical research has centered on improving the evaluation and management of patients with neuromuscular disorders (NMDs). Dr. Carter’s work helped identify chronic pain, nociceptive and neuropathic, as a major component of disease burden in many of these disorders, most of which had previously been characterized as “painless.” He was also among the first investigators to identify a potential role for exogenous cannabinoids in the management of NMDs, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Charcot Marie Tooth (CMT). His bench research includes investigating the endocannabinoid system as a source of biomarkers and therapeutic targets in ALS. He has also done extensive bench research characterizing the electrophysiological properties and the effects of exercise in animal models of human NMDs. He has over 250 peer-reviewed publications indexed on PubMed and serve on multiple journal editorial boards.
He is a past recipient of numerous awards for research and teaching, including the Distinguished Researcher and the Ernest Johnson Outstanding Educator Awards from the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine, the Best Research Paper Award from the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and the Excellence in Research Writing Award from the Association of Academic Physiatrists.
